A Fast Distributed Algorithm for α-Fair Packing Problems

چکیده
Over the past two decades, fair resource allocation problems received considerable attention in avariety of application areas. While polynomial time distributed algorithms have been designed formax-min fair resource allocation, the design of distributed algorithms with convergence guarantees forthe more general α−fair allocations received little attention. In this paper, we study weighted α-fairpacking problems, that is, the problems of maximizing the objective functions∑j wjx1−αj /(1 − α)when α 6= 1 andj wj lnxj when α = 1 over linear constraints Ax ≤ b, x ≥ 0, where wj arepositive weights and A and b are non-negative. We consider the distributed computation modelthat was used for packing linear programs and network utility maximization problems. Under thismodel, we provide a distributed algorithm for general α. The algorithm uses simple local update rulesand is stateless (namely, it allows asynchronous updates, is self-stabilizing, and allows incrementaland local adjustments). It converges to approximate solutions in running times that have an inversepolynomial dependence on the approximation parameter ε. The convergence time has polylogarithmicdependence on the problem size for α 6= 1, and a nearly-linear dependence on the number of variablesfor α = 1. These are the best convergence times known for these problems.

We study weighted α-fair packing problems, that is, the problems of maximizing the objective functions (i) ∑ j wjx 1−α j /(1−α) when α > 0, α 6= 1 and (ii) ∑ j wj ln xj when α = 1, over linear constraints Ax ≤ b, x ≥ 0, where wj are positive weights and A and b are non-negative. We consider the distributed computation model that was used for packing linear programs and network utility maximizat...

متن کاملLog-Normal and Mono-Sized Particles’ Packing into a Bounded Region
Many systems can be modeled with hard and various size spheres, therefore packing and geometrical structures of such sets are of great importance. In this paper, rigid spherical particles distributed in different sizes are randomly packed in confined spaces, using a parallel algorithm. Mersenne Twister algorithm was used to generate pseudorandom numbers for initial coordination of particles. Di...
متن کاملDistributed Combinatorial Optimization – Extended Abstract
Approximating integer linear programs by solving a relaxation to a linear program (LP) and afterwards reconstructing an integer solution from the fractional one is a standard technique in a non-distributed scenario. Surprisingly, the method has not often been applied for distributed algorithms. In this paper, we show that LP relaxation is a powerful technique also to obtain fast distributed app...

Packing and covering linear programs belong to the narrow class of linear programs that are efficiently solvable in parallel and distributed models of computation, yet are a powerful modeling tool for a wide range of fundamental problems in theoretical computer science, operations research, and many other areas. Following recent progress in obtaining faster distributed and parallel algorithms f...
